DESCRIPTION:Join area writing professor Alicia Schaeffer on Wednesdays\, April 4\, 18 and 25\, to learn how to improve your writing using techniques employed by artists making collages and actors on the classical stage. The following sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Friends Auditorium:\n\nApril 4\, 2018: Based on the ideas of classic theater and acting\, particularly the Stanislavski method and Meisner technique\, this session will guide writers through character development techniques. Characters are what drive our writing\, be it memoir\, non-fiction\, fiction\, or drama. Exercises will deepen our understanding of our characters through step-by-step visualization and writing.\n\nApril 18\, 2018: Collage is a helpful and fun way to identify our emotional connection to art. We will make collages as a response to spoken word poetry and visual art\, moving quickly to allow our subconscious to participate. Then\, looking at our creations\, we will discover themes and recognize the way an audience experiences our own artistic work.\n\nApril 25\, 2018: The final session includes close-reading of a 10-minute play\, and acting out scenes in small groups. For all creative souls\, this exercise is a meaningful step toward capturing the significance of character motivation\, dialogue\, and behavior and action. \;\n\nSchaeffer is a professor of Composition\, Rhetoric\, and Creative Writing at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Post Road Magazine\, Word Riot\, Georama Travel Blog\, Woman About town\, Beyond Service\, and The Harlem Times. \;\n\nRegistration is suggested for the April workshops.
